CRNA school ICU experience requirements

150 of the 151 accredited programs in our directory publish a minimum amount of ICU experience. 121 require 1 year, 28 require more (up to 2 years), and 1 asks for less. A minimum is what makes an application eligible to be read, not what makes it competitive: programs also weigh how recent the experience is and how sick the patients you manage are. Every figure comes from the program's own admissions page. Confirm before you plan around it — and ask how a program counts the months, because some count from your licence date and some from your ICU start date.

1 program doesn't publish a minimum, so it isn't listed below. Our directory records the number of months each program requires, not which units it accepts. Whether a particular ICU, step-down, ER or PACU role counts is a question for the program.

CRNA school ICU experience requirements — FAQ

How much ICU experience do you need for CRNA school?

One year is the standard: 121 of the 150 programs in our directory that publish a minimum require 1 year. 28 require more, up to 2 years. Minimums are the floor — many applicants apply with more, and the acuity of your unit matters as well as the months. Confirm each program's rule on its own page.

Is one year of ICU experience enough for CRNA school?

It meets the published minimum at 122 of the 150 programs that publish one, and those programs will read your application. Whether it's enough to be competitive is a different question: committees look at the kind of unit, how independently you manage unstable patients, your CCRN, and the rest of your file. Applying at exactly the minimum puts more weight on everything else.

What kind of ICU counts?

Programs generally want high-acuity adult critical care, where you manage vasoactive drips, ventilators and unstable patients. Beyond that, the rules differ: some accept step-down, ER, PACU or paediatric units and some don't, and several ask for a specific unit type. Our directory records how many months each program requires, not which units it accepts, so check the program's own page or ask their admissions office.

When do the months start counting?

Programs count differently — some from your RN licence date, some from your first day in the ICU, and many require the experience to be current at the time you apply or matriculate. The lowest published minimum in our directory is 11 months, at University of Alabama Birmingham Nurse Anesthesia. If you're close to a cutoff, ask the program how they count before you submit.
