Choosing where to apply

How to build a balanced program list using the directory, Compass fit scores, and Admission Odds — without over- or under-reaching.

A strong application list is balanced, not just aspirational. Here's how to build one with the research tools.

Start broad in the directory

The Program Directory lists every COA-accredited program. Filter by what actually constrains you — location, cost, GRE policy, ICU-experience expectations — to get to a realistic long list.

Score fit with Compass

Compass compares your profile against each program and labels it Reach, Target, or Likely. Fit isn't only about your stats; it's how your profile lines up with that program's typical admitted applicant.

Get an honest odds read

Admission Odds turns fit into a candid program-by-program estimate. Use it to sanity-check your list — if everything is a reach, add a few targets; if everything is a likely, you may be underselling yourself.

Aim for a balanced mix

A common shape is a few reaches, several targets, and a couple of likelies. The exact count depends on your time, application fees, and how many programs genuinely fit your situation.

Verify the details yourself

Our deadlines and application-portal links are confirmed against each program's official source and carry a Verified badge — but cycles change. Always open the program's own page to confirm dates and requirements before you commit.
